Un Jinxed James

The one or two readers here may remember a post way back when about jinxed James. He tended to play poorly at our home games. Read alcohol and smoke induced. Furthermore, when he did play well, it seems he would always get out drawn in the most horrific manner. Bad beat after bad beat. James went to Vegas and got "un" jinxed.

We roll into town, James, Pat and yours truly, about 8:30 a.m. Dropped our bags off at the 4 Queens and headed over to Binions. We all decide to play in the 10 a.m. tourney. This really amounts to a three table sit n' go but it was fun.

I started out running hot in cards but getting little to show for it. For the twenty minutes I was in the tourney I saw QQ get out straightened. AK and AQ out flopped. TT win a small pot. JJ win pre flop. And AA get no action. My bust out hand was AT. I was in the big blind. It is limped around in 4 spots plus the small blind. The first limper looked like he wanted to raise pre flop but did not. The flop comes ATT. Gin!!!! I check and the strong guy picks up chips to bet and then just checks. I am pretty sure he has an ace. I am formulating in my head how to extract value. Turn is so ugly....A. I bet out he puts me all in and I call. Every one else goes away. He flips over AK and says like a donkey asshole that my ten is no good. I show him my flopped full house and told him AK got lucky. Of course the K hits the river and I go kick a slot machine. But enough about me. This is about James.

The other guy we went with busted out a little after me. We then sat down and played the highly entertaining, and maddening game that is 2/4 limit. I would periodically check on James and he was always short. Nitting it up. I checked with about 16 left and on break and he had less than one big blind. I told him to just push with any two cards blind. Alas he did not take my advice. Next thing we know he is at the final table, but a shorty. Then he is in the money, but a shorty. Then he is in the final three, but the shorty. Then he is chopping for the win. Did I mention he was a Vegas virgin. He is in town four hours and wins a tourney. He nets over $300, $50 gift certificate to the steak house and a t-shirt.

Fast forward on our last day. I run KK into AA and lose a big pot. But I did not go broke. It was a local and I was pretty sure he was huge. Anyway, James gets AK and calls $50 plus bets down to the river and scoops a plus $300 pot against super agro donk overplaying A7os....tourist.

James had a good weekend. I lost about $400. It was fun. Sort of.

I Do Not Get It #1

Jennifer Lopez?

Vegas Baby!!!!!

Leaving on a jet plane in about count em, nineteen hours. Gonna hang downtown mostly. Gonna see if I can run into the Grump. Staying at the 4 Queens. Watching some basketball and playing some poker. Everything is perfect except my Jayhawks blew it.

I play basketball on Mondays at a local elementary school. We always go to Henry T's afterwards. We walk in and see Bill Self and his wife eating dinner at a booth across the way. Our table buys his dinner. Pretty soon our waitress comes by and starts setting down two beers in front of each of us. He bought us two rounds each. Sweet. After dinner he comes over to thank us. He tells us his wife said it was a pity dinner. Too funny.

Have to hand it to him. Not two days after what might be the most disappointing loss in Kansas history, he is out in public. He is a class act. Some local sports talk radio callers have been roasting him. They question how good of a coach he is. Name me more than five programs that would not take him over their current coaches? Can't do it. I take him over anybody. He is 47 and a great recruiter. He is just getting started.

But I digress. Vegas here I come.

One

Big day here. First screen shot ever. It is special

Nice to see it happen to me. Kind of restores my faith in the game. Funny I know

As it seems to happen all the time, the player with the best hand pre-flop ends up in last place.

Daughter

Overheard my 3 year old daughter talking to 4 year old friend.

"Lucas lives in your nose." "Do you know what you take to get rid of lucas?"

Friend, "uh uh"

Daughter. "Super lucas"

Mucus

Mucinex

Too funny.

Ben Folds

Went to see Ben Folds a while back. He was playing liberty Hall in Lawrence. Kate Miller Heidke opened for him. I can not recommend her more. Felt like we were given a gift at $35 a ticket.

Ben Folds is probably my favorite artist. His music speaks to me. I think he is a musical genius. I like his profanity. I like his humor. I named my daughter Gracie. Some might call it a man crush. Fine. I can live with that.

I had plan to pseudo stalk him that afternoon before the show. I had a couple of free hours and I was gonna haunt downtown streets, hoping for the "run in". Ben is from Chapel Hill and I think Lawrence has the same feel. He often says in concerts near but not in Lawrence that he is quite fond of it. Multiple friend have run into him downtown the day of shows.

Well kids got sick and I had to do that instead. Bummer oh well. Still going to the show. Turns out a long time friend was getting her kids hair cut downtown and Folds walked in to the same joint to get his own trim. Jealous? Fuck yeah. Remember, man crush. Saw the picture on a social networking site. Screw you Karen.

Wife and I went to the show. Like I said Mary Kate Heidke, Super Bonus. Folds was great too. I like just him and the Piano, especially at the more intimate venues like Liberty hall.

Decided to go eat at Freestate Brewery next door. Had a beer and apps and then left due to the strange music choice. Rap. At Freestate. Really. Ask Pokerpeaker. Really strange choice. Not the Freestate vibe at all. It was extremely loud too.

Anyway we leave and head down Mass street to our car. We cross 7th street headed south. Liberty Hall sits on the corner of 7th and Massachusetts. How the hell does one spell cady corner. Cati corner? Caddy corner? Kati corner. I don't know but caddy corner to Liberty Hall is the Eldrdge Hotel. As we cross the street we notice all the "groupies" surrounding the tour bus. We kind of laugh as we step up on the curb and looked at each other as we kept walking. A man had come across the street from the hotel and passed us as we cleared the stop light pole. We walk a few more paces and the groupies erupt. We look back to see what the clamour was about. The man who passed us was pulling a suit case on wheels and had almost reached the Liberty Hall side. Yep Ben Fucking Folds. He passed so close to us we could have kissed him.

Just shook my head in disbelief. My wife looked at me and said "You do love me!"

Yeah.
